Abstract
Spontaneous rosette-forming assay were used to evaluate the T-lymphocyte subpopulation of peripheral blood lymphocyte in 25 cancer patients including 7 patients without weight loss and 18 patients with concomitant weight loss and the results compared with the data of 7 normal control subjects, between October, 1975 and March, 1976, at the Department of Surgery of Seoul National University.
The mean percentage of rosette forming cells in seven normal control subjects was 60.9+ 7.2% (Mean¡¾S.D.), absolute lymphocyte count was 2429¡¾572/mm3 and absolute T-lymphocyte count was 1502¡¾450/mm3. The percentage of T cells in seven cancer patients without weight loss was not lower than that of normal control subjects and absolute lymphocyte count and absolute T-lymphocyte count were not significantly decreased.
In eighteen: cancer patients with concomitant weight loss the mean percentage of rosette form-ing T-lymphocytes was 56.6¡¾13.6%, absolute lymphocyte count was 1738¡¾815/mm3 and the mean level of rosette forming T-lymphocytes was 929¡¾472/mm3. As compared to control group, cancer patients with weight loss showed significantly depressed levels, of circulating rosette forming T-lymphocytes(0.01Law and Dudrick¢¥s. Observation that impaired reactivity to DNCB in patients with protein-ca-lorie malnutrition was improved after intravenous hyperalimentation15) suggest that protein repletion by intravenous feeding for 2-3 weeks should be highly, considered in cancer patients with -weight loss and poororal intake to improve their immunocompetence and to decrease increased possible chance of malignant cell metastasis: evoked by operation.
